The best selling guide to the Big Island... Hawaii "My family and I have been coming to Hawaii for many years and your guidebooks are the best on the market." |
Royal Kona Resort (800) 222-5642 or (808) 329-3111 75-5852 Alii Dr. ![]() 436 rooms, pool and keiki pool, 4 tennis courts (3 lighted), 2 restaurants, coffee makers in rooms with free coffee daily, free room safes, coin-op laundry, Wi-Fi in lobby and rooms, 5 conference rooms, free fitness room, hair salon, small day spa, wedding coordinator, lu‘au. Although they have a nice oceanfront location in downtown Kona (you can walk anywhere from here), the resort went way downhill and rooms were mostly refurbished at press time. (The Bay Tower was closed for renovations with no date available for completion.) The renovated rooms are fresher but not remarkable. The common areas now are in need of attention. Owned by tour giant Pleasant Holidays, rates are cheaper if you book a package through them. (They’d better be.) Of the three buildings, the Lagoon Building is the quietest in terms of human activity. They don’t have a beach, but there is a saltwater lagoon to swim in next to the Lagoon Tower. The other big downtown Kona hotel is the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, and between the two, we prefer the King Kam over the Royal Kona. Rooms (337 sq. ft.) are $550$1,150. Suites (5982,025 sq. ft.) are $1,900$3,100. Their rack rates seem utterly out of this hemisphere and we can’t imagine why anyone would pay them. You’ll also pay $10 a day to park and $1 for a local call. |
